GATE Civil Engineering - About

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT BHU and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The GATE committee, which comprises of representatives from the administering institutes, is the sole authority for regulating the examination and declaring the results. The GATE score of a candidate reflects the relative performance level of a candidate.

Based on previous year GATE CE papers, Geo-Technical (Soil Mechanics, Consolidation, Permeability, Slope Stability, Index properties, Foundation Design, Concrete Technology), Environmental & Transportation Engineering and Fluid Mechanics are having weightage more than 50 marks. So prioritizing these subjects may get you more marks. Apart from the above subjects and topic Maths and Aptitude reasoning has good weight in the question paper. Question up to 30 marks are asked all together from Maths , Aptitude and reasoning.

Important topics added in the exam:

  1. Calculus: Application of definite integral to obtain area & Volume
  2. Partial Differential Equation (PDE): Solutions of one dimensional diffusion equation, 2nd order wave equation
  3. Probability and Statistics: Exponential Distribution & Hypothesis testing
  4. Numerical Methods: Accuracy & precision, error analysis, least square, approximation, Newtons & lagrange polynomials
  5. Concrete Structures: Design of beams, slabs, columns& Bond and development length
  6. Soil Mechanics: Soil structure and fabric, unified and indian standard soil classification system.
  7. Foundation Engineering:Method of slices and bishop's method
  8. Hydrology: Flood routing, surface run-off models, ground water, hydrology-steady state well hydraullics and aquifers
  9. Irrigation: Canal regulatory works, cross drainage structures, outlets and escapes
  10. Transportation Infrastructure: Geometric design of highways, geometric design of railway track. airport runway length, taxiway and exit taxiway design.
  11. Highway Pavements: Highway materials-desirable properties of quality control tests, traffic engg, level of service of rural highways and urban roads, types of intersections and channelization
  12. Geomatics Engineering: Triangulation survey, total station, hotogrammetry-scale, fly height, remote sensing -basics, platform and sensors, visual image interpretation, basics of geographical information system and(GIS),geographical positioning system(GPS).
  13. Steel Structures: Working stress and limit state design concepts
