GATE Mechanical Engineering - About

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination being conducted and administered by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT BHU and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

It aims at rigorous testing of the students’ capability in engineering concepts along with managerial skills. Engineering subjects cover 70 per cent weightage while General aptitude and Engineering Mathematics cover 15 per cent respectively. Examinations for all the 23 papers will be conducted by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT). The online examination paper will contain some questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad. Rest of the questions shall be of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type.

Recent Trends:

In the recent years the trend of Students appeared and Students Qualified is very significant. From 4.2 lakh aspirants appeared in 2010 out of which 59 thousand qualified, the number of aspirants touched 9.8 lakh in 2013; 1.3 lakh qualified and dropped in following years to 8.1 lakh in 2016 out which 1.3 lakh qualified. It is one of the toughest examinations in our country where competition is very high and requires focused study in a planned manner.

Validity:

The validity of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score has been increased from two years to three years. The score of GATE  is used for admissions to postgraduate programmes such as ME, M.Tech and direct Ph.D in IITs and among other institutes of higher learning. It is also preferred by some of the public and private sector undertakings for employment screening purposes. A valid GATE score is also essential for obtaining financial assistance during Master’s programmes and direct doctoral programs in institutes supported by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) or other government agencies.

Expected Question from Topics & Sub-Topics:

By analyzing the trends of the previous year we forecast that Engineering Mathematics, Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics & Theory of Machines are most important topics and sub-topics. Candidates appearing for GATE 2017 must lay a lot of emphasis on these subjects.
